Just a few ingredients in this easy honey sriracha sauce recipe create the perfect combination of flavors!
- Sriracha sauce – Sriracha chili sauce is a popular chili sauce found in just about any grocery store, made from red chili peppers, garlic, vinegar, sugar, and salt. It has a bold, slightly sweet bit of heat without being overwhelming. Some substitutes if you can’t get or don’t want sriracha are:
- Gochujang – A Korean chili paste with a slightly sweeter, fermented depth of flavor. You can thin it out with a bit of water or rice vinegar.
- Sambal Oelek – A chili paste made with crushed red chili peppers, offering similar heat but with less sweetness. You can add a little extra honey to balance it out.
- Harissa – A North African chili paste with a smoky, complex flavor.
- Soy sauce – I used regular Soy Sauce, but you can also use dark soy sauce, low sodium or light soy sauce, or Gluten Free Soy Sauce. Beef, chicken, or vegetable, stock or broth can be used as substitutes. Coconut aminos is an alternative that’s also gluten-free.
- Honey – Agave syrup or brown sugar are alternatives you can use in this sauce.
- Rice vinegar – You can substitute white wine vinegar or even apple cider vinegar.
- Garlic – fresh garlic is best! You can substitute garlic powder or granules too.
- Butter – salted or unsalted work here.
- Cornstarch – Cornstarch is mixed with cold water to create a slurry to thicken this sauce.

Honey and Sriracha FAQs
Is honey sriracha sauce spicy?
The brand of sriracha sauce will determine the spicy note of your completed sauce. If you don’t have a favorite you already use, you can pick one up in the Asian/International section at your grocer and play with the profile. Adding cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes will also enhance heat, add complexity to the final sauce.
Can this sauce be prepared mild?
You can reduce the sriracha sauce to 3 tablespoons and let it be a sweeter sauce. Play with the amount to reach your flavor preference.
Can you add the sauce to the dish it’s being used on before you cook it or should it be added once it’s done cooking?
For best results, you should cook the sauce first to meld all of the flavors together and thicken it with the cornstarch. If you want a thinner sauce, you can eliminate the cornstarch and water and add it as a marinade without cooking it first. Use it as a dipping sauce, a marinade, baste your food with the sauce while baking or do a combination where it cooks with the dish and add some at the end. It’ll caramelize a bit while cooking and give a scrumptious flavor!
