Christmas Party Food! Stress-Free Menu, Guide, & Daily Checklist

Is the thought of hosting a Christmas party daunting for you?  I get it.  I was a caterer, I’m a type-A crazy-list-girl, everything-must-be-planned, love-cooking-and-entertaining person and I STILL get overwhelmed by the thought of hosting a Christmas party.  However, I also LOVE to entertain so I can easily get myself over the initial freak-out and focus on the fun part – the planning, haha! 🙂

When I had my own catering company, I mastered the art of Prep-Ahead and checklists for everything from labeling platters and spoons, to prepping ingredients each day, to planning table & room decorations, staffing and more.  I use this expertise when hosting my own parties these days and I’m now sharing this all with you!  This is my ULTIMATE GUIDE to Hosting a STRESS-FREE CHRISTMAS/HOLIDAY PARTY!

If you’re on the fence about hosting at your home, let me start with what I find so wonderful about hosting my own holiday party:

  • I get to pick the guests, so absolutely everyone at the party is someone I care about and want to talk to
  • It’s a catch-all Christmas/holiday gift to all my friends in 1 night.
  • I truly enjoy the preparation and cooking, BUT I make it easy, not too overwhelming – see how below
  • I make my guests a part of the fun so they have a role to play – one year it was a potluck, last year it was an Ugly Sweater Contest Party!
  • I don’t have to travel: drive/walk/take a taxi/uber/etc!
  • I get to see the joy on the faces of friends and family when they taste the food, enjoy the conversation, laugh and smile

The key to truly enjoying the party, both the preparation and during the party, is to make it simple and ensure that you are not stuck cooking or serving food/drinks the entire time, so that you can enjoy the fun and conversations with your guests.  Below are the 5 Tips for a Stress- Free Party,  Simple make-ahead & Buy Menu, and Detailed Daily Checklist for a stress-free Fun Night!

5 Tips for a Stress-Free Party

  1. Keep the guest list tight  20-25 people is a good number, give or take based on your space.  Keep in mind that people are busy this time of year, so may not be able to come.  Assume an 80% turnout.  Be sure to add a few new friends to the mix, so that you can connect old friends to new ones.
  2. Make the day of the week convenient  If you can take a Friday afternoon off from work, then I think Friday night is the best, as you are not competing with all of the other Saturday night parties and guests do not have to work the next day.  However, you can definitely try for a Saturday night or consider Sunday evening.  I am recommending appetizers only with an 8pm-11pm timeframe; but you know what times would be best for you and your friends.  If you are having this on a Sunday, you may want to consider an earlier party, like 6-9pm.
  3. No Dinner, just hors d’oeuvres!  Trying to figure out enough food for a meal and then stressing out about how to seat everyone and find enough plates and silverware is just. not. necessary!  This should be a fun event for you, not a stressful one.  I recommend having a cocktail party with stationary hors d’oeuvres.  You will want to have enough for the people that didn’t have time to grab dinner, but you will also want to let guests know that you are not serving a meal on the invitations:  Light hors d’oeuvres will be served.
  4. Engage your Guests  I love to include my guests in the party fun even before the party by asking them to bring something.  Last year it was a Wear-Your-Ugly-Holiday-Sweater.  The year before that it was a White Elephant gift party.  You can also ask them to bring in the funniest/craziest christmas/holiday decoration.  This is NOT a must for your party, but can add some light-heartedness to the event.
  5. Prep ahead!  Ok, here we get into the fun stuff!  Make a list of everything that you need to get done prior to the party with due dates and check items off as you go.  You are in luck!  I have done this for you below 🙂  And now the REALLY FUN part!  The Food Prep!!!  I mastered the art of pre-ahead during my catering days.  I have given you tips below on what can be done in advance, but make sure that you carve out a little time each day/evening to prep food so that you are not leaving it all for the day of.

Simple Make-Ahead & Buy Menu

This assumes that you are having a cocktail party with stationary hors d’oeuvres that are heavy enough to tide people over from/to a meal.  Guest count assumed is 25. Adults only.  Time: 8pm-11pm (give or take based on your preference).

I always make a few things from scratch and buy/assemble a few more.  I love being able to show I cared enough to cook but be real enough to say I’m not superwoman!  I also love FreshDirect because you can order beautifully assembled platters; however, I personally like creating my own as it costs less and I can put my personal touch to it. Check with your local grocer if you want the added convenience of pre-assembled platters.

Here are my recommendations, but of course, swap in/out any items that you want to make this your own.

Make:

Buy & Assemble (details in checklist below):

  • Antipasto Platter (1 lb Hard Salami, 1/2 lb Marinated artichoke hearts, 1/2 lb kalamata olives, 1/2 lb roasted red peppers, garlic butter, 1 box bread sticks)
  • Cheese & Crackers Platter (1 lb Mild Soft Cheese: Brie or Camembert, 1 lb Hard Cheese: Manchego or Aged Cheddar, 1 lb  Strong/Stinky Cheese: Taleggio or Gorgonzola, Red Grapes, 2 Types of Crackers)
  • Veggie Crudités Platter with Creamy Olive Dip (1 lb bag of Baby Carrots, 1 lb celery, 2 Medium zucchini, 2 Red Peppers – or any other veggies you like!) click for Olive Dip recipe
  • Cashews (1 lb – 2 bowls in different locations)
  • Chocolates (1 lb – 2 bowls in different locations)

Holiday Party Detailed Daily Checklist & Schedule

Weekend before

  1. Make sure you have a babysitter lined up
  2. Confirm that you can borrow/rent chairs/tables (if needed, but don’t go nuts, people will stand!)
  3. Check the RSVPs to see what your final count is looking like and follow up with anyone that you have not heard back from.
  4. Pick out your outfit (and your partner’s if needed)
  5. Buy white elephant gift (if needed)
  6. Print out all recipes (including the platters listed above) and make your shopping list!
  7. Buy all groceries, EXCEPT the following, which you will want to buy closer to the party: (a) salami & prosciutto for antipasto platter (b) cheese for cheese platter (c) fresh jumbo lump crab meat.  
  8. Purchase all non-perishable and decorative items: napkins, toothpicks, candles, elegant clear plastic glasses, short & tall, if you do not have enough glasses in your house.
  9. Buy Beverages – If going with Wine, Water, and Sodas, buy 18-20 bottles of wine split across red and white (assumes 20 guests drinking 2 glasses of wine per hour for 3hrs – your friends might not drink this much!).  Buy sparkling water, flat water, 2L Coke, 2L Diet Coke.
  10. Make the Hanky Panky and freeze them on a sheet pan so that they do not freeze together.  You can cook them from the frozen state.  Once they are frozen, you can either keep them in the freezer covered on the sheet pan or transfer them to a freezer bag.
  11. Chocolates – I am a bit of a chocoholic and so I am giving the chocolate treats their own checklist item :).  I particularly love the Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans and the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups.  However, get whatever chocolates you like best.  The key is to have a few bowls of bite-size chocolates around to satisfy the holiday sweet tooth.

Monday

  1. Do another RSVP check if you are still waiting for responses
  2. Set out all decorations in another room so that you can make sure you have what you need…put candles in holders, etc.
  3. Pick out platters, bowls, ice bucket/bowl, and any other servingware that you will need for the party and place sticky notes on each indicating what they will be used for.  You will need 1 large platter each (3 total) for the Antipasto, Crudite, & Cheese/Crackers platters.  You will need smaller dishes/platters (2 total) for the meatballs & Crab Salad Canapes.  You will need small bowls (6 total) for the chocolates (2), cashews (2), and olive dip (2 – 1 for platter and 1 backup ready to go).  A larger bowl (1) for the Edamame Dip and a plate/bowl/basket (1) for Chips to go with the Edamame dip.  Small bowls (2 total) for the meatballs dipping sauce and garlic butter for the breadsticks on the antipasto platter.  You will also need a glass for the breadsticks, toothpicks and toothpick holder for the meatballs, and cheese knives for the cheeses, spreading knife for the garlic butter, spoons for the Edamame Dip and Olive Dip.

Tuesday

  1. Buy the salami & prosciutto for antipasto platter, and cheese for cheese platter 
  2. Make the Creamy Olive Dip for the Crudités platter and refrigerate click here for recipe

Wednesday

  1. Make the Edamame Gorgonzola Dip click here for recipe

Thursday

  1. If you want to, cut or slice the hard cheese.  This is not necessary though.
  2. If the salami that you bought was from the deli, cut it into quarters so that you can fan out each triangle pile on the platter later.  If you bought a salami sausage, slice it into 1/8 inch slices.  Store in fridge again. 

Friday

  1. Buy the Jumbo Lump Crab Meat. 
  2. Cut Carrots, Celery, Red Pepper, and Zucchini all into sticks and arrange Crudités platter with dip bowl.  Cover with plastic wrap and store in fridge.  Below is one of my platters, but design it your own way and put in any veggies that are your favorites!
  3. Make the dressing for Lump Crab Meat Salad & Slice the Cucumber click for recipe
  4. Chill white wine and any other beverages you need to

Saturday (PARTY DAY!)

  1. Morning: First thing in the morning, create the Antipasto Platter by placing each of the ingredients you purchased in sections of the platter.  Add the garlic butter and breadstick glass either on the platter or next to it.  and store in fridge.  
  2. Morning: Make the Cheese Platter IF you have space to keep it in the fridge.  If not, make it right before the party starts.  You can really arrange it anyway you want.  Here is an example of a platter that I did for catering.  I do NOT recommend stacking up cheese this way, since you are home and can replenish it.  I love using menu cards to let guests know what kind of cheese it is.  You can take an index card and fold it in half to stand.

  1. Morning: Combine the Lump Crab Meat with the dressing.  
  2. Morning: Pick up any borrowed/rented items (example chairs)
  3. Morning: Clean house (don’t go too nuts as it will get dirty, but bathroom should be cleaned) 
  4. Afternoon: Music playlist or channel keyed up
  5. Afternoon:  tables where you will place any food or beverages: tablecloth, decorate with confetti or tinsel, ball ornaments, candles.  
  6. Afternoon:  cocktail napkins and plates at all food locations
  7. Afternoon:  counter or table: keep it simple!  Red/white wine, sparkling water, flat water, coke, Diet Coke.  Ice in ice bucket or bowl, glasses, napkins, bottle opener 
  8. Afternoon:  the place where you will put white elephant gifts (if you needed)
  9. Afternoon:  closet/room where you will place coats/bags and where you will have shoes placed if you are a shoeless home
  10. Afternoon:  furniture as needed, example moving a table up against the wall or moving chairs to perimeter of room
  11. 1.5 Hours before party, prepare the bruschetta platter, by placing toasted baguette out.  Put the topping in a serving bowl with a serving spoon or spreader, but keep in the fridge until the party starts.
  12. 1 Hour before party, put the chocolate and cashew bowls out
  13. 1 Hour before party, make the cheese platter if you didn’t already do that in the morning.
  14. 1 Hour before party, put the Crab salad on the cucumbers and plate first batch to put out.  Store all in fridge until party.
  15. 30 minutes before party, place Hanky Panky on sheet pan and bake for 15 minutes.  Serve in batches of ~15 at a time and prepare another tray to go into the oven.  Replenish as needed.  If you have a hot plate, you can put them all out at once.  
  16. 20 minutes before party, put all platters out.  
  17. 10 minutes before party, pour yourself a drink and get ready to have fun!!

I am so excited to be sharing 10 of my favorite Tasty and Easy Gluten Free Recipes for Summer!

Yes, it is finally Summer!  Woo hoo!  That means sun, warmer weather, picnics, pools, beaches, and playing outdoors. I always feel happier and more energetic when the sun is shining and I can play outside – with or without the kiddos :).

Summer also means bathing suits, so if you’re like me, in the Summertime you look for some recipes that are a bit lighter and won’t weigh you down so much.  As I have shared before, I eat gluten free because I find that that my body digests gluten free foods better and I am much less bloated when I cut out the gluten.  And that definitely helps me feel more confident and happy in a bathing suit.

However, lighter and gluten free should never mean skimping on flavor.  So, here are 10 of my favorite EASY GLUTEN FREE RECIPES for this Summer that are FULL of FLAVOR, but will not leave you feeling weighed down.

10 TASTY & EASY GLUTEN FREE RECIPES FOR SUMMER

 1.  Quinoa Risotto & Cauliflower Steaks

Since quinoa delivers protein, it’s a great opportunity to swap out meat for Cauliflower Steaks! These steaks can be grilled outside for an amazing meat alternative. This is a Creamy Parmesan Quinoa Mushroom Risotto recipe with garlic, parmesan, and mushrooms. Paired with the hearty Cauliflower steak spiced with Cumin, Chili Powder, and Garlic, this is the perfect meal!

Quinoa is truly a superfood, especially in the gluten free world. It’s high in protein, has nearly 2x the fiber found in other grains, and has iron, antioxidants, and more!. This recipe takes Quinoa to a whole other level.  It is a Creamy Parmesan Quinoa Mushroom Risotto recipe with garlic, parmesan, and mushrooms. Paired with the hearty Cauliflower steak spiced with Cumin, Chili Powder, and Garlic, this is the perfect meal!  This is a filling, but healthy and light meal that is great for summer as you can make the Quinoa Risotto ahead and then quickly either roast or grill the Cauliflower Steaks the night of.

 2.  Mediterranean Flank Steak with Kale Cauliflower Rice

Mediterranean Flank Steak with Kale & Feta Cauliflower Rice is a delicious Mediterranean-inspired recipe with a flavorful garlic-oregano-rubbed flank steak on top of delicious cauliflower "rice". Finish with a cool and bright lemon garlic yogurt sauce. The salty, texture-filled, Kale and Feta Cauliflower Rice seriously tastes just like rice filled with flavor.

What’s more Summer than potato salad, right?  This Fully Loaded Potato Salad has salty bacon and cheddar cheese, creamy and rich egg, fresh scallions and baby spinach, and crunchy carrots.  The dressing is simple with a blend of yellow mustard and mayo.  YUMM-Y!  I love to create EASY, YUMMY, COMFORT-FOOD with a HEALTHY TWIST.  And what can be more comforting than Potato Salad with bacon, egg, and cheese?  So the healthy twist here is obviously the addition of spinach and carrots.  So eat up!!

 6.  Chicken & Seared Cabbage Salad

This warm Chicken and Seared Cabbage Salad with carrots and broccoli can be eaten by itself or on top of rice and it is great warm or cold! I love asian flavors and the nuttiness from the sesame oil, the saltiness from the soy sauce, with the sweetness from the honey and vinegar are a wonderful combination.

 7.  5-Ingredient Chunky Chicken Vegetable Soup

5-Ingredient Chunky Chicken Vegetable Soup is creamy without the cream (in fact, there is no dairy at all in this dish).  It's chunky but somehow still light.  And with loads of chicken, carrots, and peas, t's full of flavor and texture even though it only has 5 ingredients.

Chicken Soup hardly seems like a Summer recipe.  However, let me tell you that Chicken soup can feed the soul absolutely any time of the year, including Summer.  This 5-Ingredient Chunky Chicken Vegetable Soup is perfect for busy Summer nights because it is entirely MAKE-AHEAD!  Also, while it is deliciously creamy and hearty, it is also very light as there is no dairy or heavy noodles.  With loads of chicken, carrots, and peas, it’s full of flavor and texture even though it only has 5 ingredients.

 8.  Cilantro Lime Yogurt Chicken & Sweet Peppers

Summer food doesn’t have to be just grilled foods or cold salads.  You are busy and still need go-to sheet pan oven meals.  This Cilantro Lime Yogurt Chicken & Peppers is a bright and sunny one-pan wonder with fresh sweet peppers, broccoli, and chicken.  The yogurt marinade tenderizes the chicken helping to keep it moist and tender as it cooks. The flavors seep into the meat and coat the outside so when it roasts, it gets this sweet and salty crust. The mini sweet peppers are not only cute, but so delicious and sweet. The broccoli is crunchy and crisp.  Serve with a crusty bread, rice, orzo, Quinoa, or pasta!

9.  Chicken Summer Rolls with Garlic Honey Soy Sauce

I mean c’mon, it has ‘Summer’ in the name!  But really, aside from the name, these are really a wonderful Summer treat to make for lunch, appetizers, or dinner.  They are also tons of fun for kids to help with!  These Chicken Summer Rolls start with Teriyaki Chicken strips, Rice noodles, carrots, red pepper, and basil.  All get rolled up in a light moistened rice paper.  What you get is this bite of freshness that you dip into the sweet, tangy, and salty Garlic Honey Soy Sauce.  These are a Summer delight!

10.  Veggie Quinoa Salad with Creamy Lemon DressingVeggie Quinoa Salad with Creamy Lemon Dressing is loaded with flavor, texture, color and is both delicious and nutritious! This Quinoa Veggie Salad has cucumber, sweet peppers, radicchio, scallions, and parsley. The dressing is a bright Creamy Lemon Dressing with Lemon, honey, mustard, and sour cream.

When I think of Summer, I think of salads.  But, salads don’t just need to be greens, this Veggie Quinoa Salad with Lemon Dressing is a cool, refreshing, but filling and delicious salad that can stand alone or be a great side dish.  It has so many fresh and flavorful vegetables including cucumber, sweet peppers, radicchio, scallions, and parsley.  The dressing is a bright Creamy Lemon Dressing with Lemon, honey, mustard, and sour cream.  You can also make a huge batch of this and portion out for lunches and eat all week!
